Finally gave it a spin.  
like OG WhatsApp, it just uses the address book as your friend graph (no adding / request / accepting contact).  Removes a lot of friction to onboarding and having contacts, but in exchange for this disembodied data, brings a lot of noisy baggage. This is potentially even worse kind of binary graph -  the people we have phone numbers for are from all sorts of contexts, are not equal to us an  we never anticipated broadcasting to anyone who might be in your address book (incl whoever signs up later).  

Due to this, i don't believe it can deliver on its promise of "loved ones, close friends & family".
